Birds
In the interactive cage, you will find yourself in a botanical garden permitting close interaction with majestic Flamingoes, Ibis from South America and Africa, Spatulas and much more.
The Cage of Lories, an aviary full of colour, you will enjoy close up the flight and behaviour of some of the most attractive birds proceeding from Oceania who are close relatives of Parrots.
Other species of birds you may find here at Palmitos Park are Toucans, Emus, Hornbills or Pelicans. Enjoy the vivid colours of rare species in a setting of exuberant vegetation where the birds can fly freely.
The garden
The house of orchids in Palmitos Park comprises the biggest collection of orchids in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A great garden composed of tens of Orchid species proceeding from tropical areas and subsoil Australia. Through their leaves they can store small quantities of food and water which allows them to grow in almost any climate conditions.
The cactus garden is also a very surprising part of the park with hundreds of different species, some of them more than 4m in height. Cactuses are xerophytes or xerophilous plants, who have had to modify their physiology in order to store water to be able to face periods of prolonged drought.
Additionally there is also a beautiful house of Butterflies which it’s the biggest butterfly venue in Europe where you can see hundreds of butterflies flying freely, appreciate the different phases of their life cycle, from the chrysalis up to the moment of Emergence. An unrepeatable experience full of emotion.
Aquarium
In the Park there are from some of the more striking venomous fish, like the Surgeon Fish or the Scorpion Fish, up to the most loved by the little ones, the Clown Fish, all living together in the Salt Water section.
We also have another part destined for fresh water marine life. Visitors will find in this recreation of the course of the enigmatic murky river, species like the little known Black Pacu or one of the marine species that awakens most affection amongst nature lovers, the Sea Horses.
Reptiles
Here in the reptiles section you will find the first example of Komodo Dragon belonging to the first generation raised in captivity in Europe. It’s the biggest specie of the lizard group reaching up to 3m in height and weighing some 90kg. Its diet includes mainly meat and it uses its venomous bacteria charged saliva as a weapon capable of killing large mammals at the blink of an eye.
There is also the Caiman Lakes where you can see close up the greatest swamp predators. These reptiles spend a great amount of time in the water and are capable of both opening their mouth and swallowing under the water without drowning. In our lake you may find the Spectacled Caiman, Californian Turtles, and the Gran Canaria Giant Lizard – an endemic species characteristic of Gran Canaria – living in perfect synchrony.
